The art of shaping.

Antonio Massarutto is an artist from Northern Italy.
An all-round sculptor, he moves easily from one material to another. Lines and forms play a crucial role in his universe.
But his true inclination is to investigate materials, whether stone, marble, wood, clay or metal, in order to reveal their hidden soul.
This quest has brought him to Tuscany, the cradle of man’s cultural heritage and an area with a centuries-old artistic tradition,
and so an ideal place to pursue his art.

In the vicinity of Cortona Antonio discovered ideal locations for finding materials to sculpt: the numerous local pietra serena (sandstone) quarries, travertine marble near the spa town of Rapolano Terme, clay in the nearby Siena hills or Crete as they are known, and noble marble from Carrara. His knowledge of three-dimensional arts has inspired him in creating stunning jewellery.

In Arezzo, one of Italy’s major areas for gold working, he began collaborating as a designer with major companies, at the same time learning the latest goldsmith’s techniques. In a short time Antonio had gathered the secrets of the great Arezzo gold working tradition of ancient Etruscan origin. From lost-wax casting of metals such as gold, silver and bronze (a technique very similar to that used by the Etruscans in ancient times), the designer creates forms and concepts that are closer to artworks, particularly to contemporary sculpture.

For your special gifts, the artist’s showrooms are located in
via Nazionale and in via Guelfa, Cortona.

Buonanotte…

Tonight Cortona is a sleeping beauty
cradled by a warm September night,
watched over by a silent white moon
and crickets singing lullabies.

And one of my favourite goodnight songs is
“Dormi e Sogna”….(Sleep and Dream)

Secret Artist – Donatella De Palma

After being the most rational girl in the world,
at the age of fifty has a complete change of perspective, embracing art in all its unpredictable ways.
She starts one day in the middle of a sunny June 2006, in Cortona’s beautiful countryside and falls in love with colours and brushes and hands and eyes and any paintable surface.

In 6 years she goes through so many artistic periods that Picasso himself would be amazed! …the black pen period, the sphere period, the silhouette period, the blue pen period, the phosphorescent period, and many more…

Unfortunately, every now and then, she also goes through a “painting-on-top-of-finished-paintings” period, which sometimes causes the loss of very beautiful artwork.
She is also a very inspired interior designer and a curious photographer.

People are her favourite  subject, but not the only one…

“I love to find out who they are! I don’t know the people I draw…
they are just ‘my people’ whoever they are and wherever they may exist..”

Artist Jannis Kounellis in Cortona.

Since 2001 a special Cortonantiquaria Prize is given every year, during the fair, to important personalities, from artist to entrepreneurs.

This year it has been awarded to Jannis Kounellis, famous Greek sculptor and painter, who has been working and living in Italy for so long now that he’s considered one of the most “Italian” amongst contemporary artists.

The gala ceremony during which the prize will be given to Kounellis will take place tonight at 9.45 pm in Sant’Agostino Auditorium in Cortona.

Jannis Kounellis

Kounellis is currently working at a special site-specific project for the Cortonantiquaria
exhibition,a work of art he wants to donate to our beautiful precious town.
The work will be formed by old and antique wooden furniture.

“Wood, furniture are the pivot of the antique.
Wooden furniture are like old coats, that have smells, colours and unique and unrepeatable shapes.
I want to render homage to these old wooden coats, recuperating their deep soul, sinking into wood and shape” says Kounellis.

The Aeneid in Cortona.

On the 19th of July, in the beautiful courtyard of the Museum of the Etruscan Academy of Cortona, the Aeneid will come alive through the art of the “Cunto Siciliano”, the traditional Sicilian storytelling and a wondrous example of epic theatre: sound, rhythm, body and voice release in space a playful and mighty energy.

“Arma virumque cano,

Troiae qui primus ab oris

Ialiarn fato profugus…”

The Aeneid, with its immortal lines distributed in twelve books, tells the story of the glorious Trojan race veterans, ancestors of the  “gens Iulia”.

A poem, which, although linked to the glory of Rome in the world, is for us, in fact, a beautiful fabric, a magical tapestry of events, heroes, romances and flights, which long to return to life through a body and a voice, in space and time.

On this particular occasion, Aeneas is followed in his legendary flight after the destruction of Troy. The title of the play is “La fuga di Enea”,…”Aeneas’ flight”.

Aeneas' legendary peregrination.

In the “Cunto”, though, there also are continuous personal insertions and emblematic poetry, which unexpectedly turn the spotlight towards the “new” migrants from Africa and Iraq, who wander through the Mediterranean to leave war wounds behind.

The bodies and voices of Vincenzo Pirrotta and Nancy Lombardo will be directed by Vincenzo Pirrotta himself, with music by Mario Spolidoro  played by Luca Mauceri and sceneries of Pasquale De Cristofaro.

Don’t miss it!

July 19th 2011, Palazzo Casali, Cortona.

Cortona and the Louvre: an imaginary Etruscan thread

Cortona may be small, but it’s brimming with precious things.

An interesting selection of them are treasured by the Museum of the Etruscan Academy of Cortona (MAEC). A beautiful palace of tremendous history:

it was built on the area of Etruscan buildings and had its upheaval in the 14th century when it was enlarged and restored to become the residence of the Signori of Cortona, the Casali family. It’s so majestic that it also houses the Civic and Academy Library and the Historic Civic Archive.

You’ll find it in Piazza Signorelli, or, as I would say if I were explaining to a tourist, “the square were the theatre is!”

The Museum is on two levels, was founded in 1727 and its treasures are divided in three sections: the archaeological collection, the Egyptian collection and the Medieval and Modern collection. I won’t describe them because I’d need a whole week, but maybe telling you that in my life I’ve visited it something like fifteen times and still find it fascinating, should do the trick and make you want to go and vis

Let me explain:
There’s an area in the MAEC which is for temporary expositions. At this very moment it’s displaying 40 Etruscan master works owned by the French Louvre.

An imaginary thread will guide you from amazing vases, votive little statues, pottery, breathtaking golden jewelry…

…to the masterpiece, symbol of the exhibition: the bust of a beautiful Ariadne.

Due to its big success, the exhibition has just been extended to the end of July.

So, if you’re in Cortona, hurry up! Before this inestimable collection flies back to France!
